Efes is actually facing a kind of strange season where we hardly see the team dominating Euroleague basketball as they did in the last 2 seasons.
«This is third division basketball with these shots».
Ergin Ataman does not mince words, as always, after the loss in St Petersburg that puts his team on a 10/11 record, 7 wins away from the top of the standings and eventually out of the playoff spot in case tonight Monaco defeats Real Madrid or Bayern triumphs in the german derby.
Well, it’s not usual to see the defending champs in these situations, but we all know this is another weird season in Euroleague and we can easily expect the unexpected.
4/25 from the arc, a poor 16%, is in the words of the Coach the main reason of the loss yesterday night. Last week in the W against Pana that stat was 7/28 while in Palau Blaugrana was 5/26. In Kazan, another loss, the european side of Istanbul made 6 of 21 attempts while the W against Zvezda was the last time they went over 40%., with a 11/26 (42,3%). This means 22/100 in 4 games, with 3 L and just 1 W. And that win came in the last possession with one of the two low ranked teams actually in European basketball.
The team is actually ranked 16th in the 3 pointers percentage with 33,39%: just Pana and Zvezda, curiously the last two teams defeated by Efes, are shooting worse.
What makes these numbers heavier is the fact the defending champions shoot from the arc 42% of the times while 2 pointers are “only” 58%. Olympiacos only uses 3 pointers more (45%) and it’ still about the reds if we want to find the only team using two pointers less than Efes (55% vs 58%).
Ataman, once more, was very direct to Micic: «Our pointguard turned the ball over 7 times». This is not the first time Ergin is addressing to his phenomal player this way. Will the result be the same as in the past, with Micic reaction coming soon?
Sure Micic and Larkin, the two guys that were opponents’ killers in last 1000 Euroleague days are not performing at the level we expect from them and the whole team is suffering because of this situation.
Next 3 games will be @Cska, vs Asvel and @Olympiacos, before the stop for the national cups. These three games will say a lot about Efes’ future this season. In the case they might reach the postseason in a low ranked position, we are pretty sure this will not be very welcome from the teams at the top of the standings.
We will be back on Efes in the next days, going deeper into their season.
