Good morning Euroleague | Hey Coach, what’s your body language?

Euroleague is well known as a “Coaches’ league” so different from NBA, universally considered as a “players’ league”. This story is very interesting.

Coach Mac newsletter (basketballforcoaches.com) is something most of the Coach should check daily, especially the younger ones. So many themes about coaching and the development and growth of the players.

The following is a story well known in America happened last year that can open some reflexions about the coaches’ attitude in a world like Euroleague, where we properly consider those basketball minds as real superstars. The recent reaction by Ergin Ataman in Palau clearly shows which kind of stars are we talking about.

Since starring guys like Steve Kerr and Draymond Green, this one brings us to highest level of basketball.

In November of last year at the very start of this NBA season, the Golden State Warriors played the Charlotte Hornets at home.

The Warriors were 6-1 at the time, but must have had a very sluggish first quarter, because their coach – Steve Kerr – was NOT HAPPY with his team’s performance. And he didn’t try to hide his disgust.

In Kerr’s own words…: “I was so disgusted with the team’s play that I was pouting and my body language was terrible.”

And then something that doesn’t happen often, happened…

Draymond called his coach out on it. He told him: “Coach we need your body language. We look over to the bench every time we turn the ball over and it looks like somebody died over there. It’s deflating … you keep dropping your head and it’s killing us.” (paraphrased)

Kerr immediately changed his energy and the team responded.

Here’s how Kerr described the interaction post-game: “I was kind of embarrassed,” Kerr said. “I was like, ‘You know what? You’re right.’ After all the turnovers, I’m just sitting there like, ‘Fine, fine, whatever,’ acting like they were on their own out there. It was not my best moment as a coach. It was great for Draymond to remind me they need my energy too.”

The ultimate professional (a lot of coaches have egos that could not handle getting called out by a player)

This is such an important interaction to think about…

Coaches have a BIG impact on the confidence of the team, and things are only going to get progressively worse if you stop supporting them. This doesn’t mean you can’t “get after them” about mistakes during a timeout (as Draymond said)… but once it’s over, they need to know you have their back. And body language plays a big part in that.

Problem is… A coach’s anger / frustration / terrible body language after turnovers leads to players hesitating, and hesitant players commit turnover after turnover.

So, do your best to keep a positive attitude on the sidelines. Your players need it to thrive.

It’s a pleasant story and it’s mostly about the greatness of Coach Steve Kerr: as humble as great.

Looking at more than 200 games per season in EL we could have a look to many situations when the anger of the Coaches was so intense and some of them were addressing to the team really harshly. But going deeper into the situation it’s not about that anger. We perfectly know how important are these European coaches and how much they are demanding to there teams. It’s a show in the show and we know too how would it be difficult to coach that way in NBA. It’s all about that body language, so just a few seconds after these situations, they keep on pushing their player to the limit. Most of them do that, most of them are great.

As Draymond Green said in the postgame interview «As soon as Coach body language changed, the team body language changed».
