Sasha Vezenkov earns the honor of the MIP after a great season where he was the landmark of Olympiacos BC reaching the second spot in EL standings.
Sasha Vezenkov was a very good basketball player in the past years. This season he showed so many superstar’s performances being fundamental in Olympiacos run to the second place in EL standings. That’s the reason why he earns the Eurodevotion award as “most improved player” of 2021/22 regular season.
Our staff selected him 8 times out of 19 possible votes.
3 preferences went to Maodo Lo and 2 each for Ante Zizic and Rokas Jokubaitis. 1 vote was expressed for Augustine Rubit, Shaq McKissic, Moustapha Fall and John Brown III.
Vezenkov, triple citizen of Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus, where he was born in 1995, played all the 31 season games till now with the “red” jersey.
He spent on the court an average of 29’35”, scoring 13,8 points with 68,6% in two pointers, 38,1% from the arc and 83,3% from the line. 5,6 rebounds and a PIR of 17,8 (5th best in the league after Mirotic, Tavares, Larkin and Vesely) complete a breakout performance all season long.
Compared to 2020/21 campaign he improved in scoring (13,8 v 11,5), minutes played (917’08” v 731’20” total), 2p percentage (68,6 v 67,7%), rebounds (5,5 v 5,3) and PIR (17,8 v 14,7).
In his best Euroleague ever he had “career highs” in assists (6), steals (5), free throws made (7) and time played (38′).
Being one of the main reason of the splendid tournament played by the reds, now we perfectly understand why Coach Bartzokas insisted so much to sign him and then extend his contract with the Piraues team.
He played as a power forward as well as a “3” able to match any kind of rivals.
After starting his career in Thessaloniki with Aris, he signed a multiyear del with Barcelona on 2015 but was then released after 2017/18 season since the fourth year was optional. Selected as #57 from the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA Draft of 2017, his rights went in 2021 to the Cavs in the trade that involved James Harden.
His technique, shooting, passing and spacing skills as well as physicality and athleticism brought him in the conversation not only for the MIP but for the MVP too.
After Nicolò Melli selection as “best defender” of the competition, this is the second award from Eurodevotion staff. Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, MVP and Best Starting 5 will follow in these days.
